Manchester United starlet Mason Greenwood set for a new and improved contract

Manchester United are reportedly set to hand academy starlet Mason Greenwood a new bumper contract, after his impressive displays on the pre-season tour.

As per a report from The Sun, Manchester United youngster Mason Greenwood is set to be rewarded with a new and improved long-term contract, after a series of eye-catching performances on the club’s pre-season tour.

Greenwood, 17, has been with the Manchester United academy since the age of six and has risen rapidly through the youth ranks, earning rave reviews along the way for his goalscoring prowess. Regarded as one of the brightest prospects at the club, the forward made his senior debut for the Red Devils in the 3-1 win against PSG in the Champions League earlier this year.

Greenwood went on to feature on three more occasions for Manchester United before the end of the 2018-19 campaign, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer handing him his first start in the final Premier League game against Cardiff City. The teenager shone on his full debut, even as United succumbed to a 2-0 defeat.

With star striker Romelu Lukaku believed to be headed for an exit this summer, Greenwood is expected to become more prominently involved in the first-team picture in the upcoming season. And the 17-year-old seems up for the challenge, as he was one of Manchester United’s most impressive player on their pre-season tour of Australasia.

Greenwood featured in all four of Manchester United’s pre-season friendlies, scoring once each against Leeds United and Inter Milan, prompting Solskjaer to consider handing him a starting berth in the Red Devils’ season opener against Chelsea. And now, the 17-year-old is also set to be rewarded with a bumper new contract as a reward for his recent growth in stature.

Greenwood signed his first professional contract with Manchester United only last October, when he turned 17. The forward is currently on wages of just £800 per week, although he does pocket an additional £5,000 for every senior appearance.

A club source told The Sun, “He isn’t on an awful lot but does get bonuses on top for each appearance. Ole wants him to focus on his football at the moment and he is doing a terrific job of that.”

The report adds that the teenager is set for a bumper pay rise as part of his new contract. Negotiations are believed to be underway, and a deal is expected to be signed before Greenwood’s 18th birthday in October.

Greenwood has shown great promise in his short time with the Manchester United first-team. The 17-year-old is set to follow in the footsteps of fellow striker Marcus Rashford and is in line to become a full-fledged member of the senior team in the 2019-20 season, with a new contract a just reward for his development.
