Barcelona are reportedly interested in Augsburg star Philipp Max but will have to compete with Liverpool to land the versatile German defender.

Spanish publication Sport have thrown two more names in the hat as Barcelona remain on the lookout for a quality addition to their options on the left side of the defence. While Jerome Roussilon is also a target, the other name is Philipp Max, who is also being tailed by Premier League giants and Champions League winners Liverpool.

The report iterates that Max would cost around €20 million, a price which should not be an issue for both Liverpool and Barcelona. Sport further clarify that, out of the two, Max is the one who is of more interest for the La Liga giants, with the interest at an advanced stage.

Philipp Max may be 25 but he only has 116 senior appearances in the Bundesliga. Once a part of Bayern Munich, Max found intermediate success at Karlsruhe. But, it is his move to Augsburg in 2015 that saw him add to his 2 Bundesliga appearances from his time at Schalke.

The 2017-18 season though, was his highlight, with Max registering 13 assists in the Bundesliga alone. The 25-year-old could now be ready to take the step up, with Barcelona and Liverpool chasing the Augsburg star.

Barcelona are in a weird predicament as far as their transfer business is concerned. The Catalan giants have spent lavishly on the likes of Frenkie de Jong and Antoine Griezmann. But, they are also looking to re-sign Neymar while also looking at the prospect of adding a left-back to their squad.

The left-back should be on top of the priority list, with no real competition for Jordi Alba at the said position. The Barcelona superstar has shown loss of form for lengths at a time, which will be a huge concern for Ernesto Valverde, especially with no real alternative to the Spanish international.

Liverpool have a similar situation at hand, with Alberto Moreno leaving the club and James Milner preferred in the central midfield role by Jurgen Klopp. This leaves Andrew Robertson as the only natural option and it is only probable for Liverpool to go searching for an able cover for the Scottish international.

€20 million for a cover is just and we could see Barcelona and Liverpool both come in with offers for the Augsburg star, who would feel it is time to make his big move.
