New Manchester United signing Daniel James has claimed that he aspires to achieve similar success as club legend and fellow Welshman Ryan Giggs.
In a recent interview, as reported by the Mirror, Manchester United summer signing Daniel James has revealed that he looks up to club legend Ryan Giggs and wants to emulate the former Red Devils’ superstar.
James joined Manchester United from Swansea City after enjoying a breakthrough season with the EFL Championship outfit. Having made his senior debut in February last year, James became a first-team regular in the 2018-19 campaign under Graham Potter, finishing the season with an impressive return of 5 goals and 10 assists from 38 matches in all competitions.
James came close to signing for Leeds United in the January transfer window, but the move collapsed in the last minute. Few months later, the 21-year-old became the first signing for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United, joining in a deal that could reach around £18 million.
James made his first appearance for the 20-time English champions in a pre-season friendly against Perth Glory last week. The Welshman was easily Manchester United’s standout performer in the first-half, dazzling with his pace and ability to beat defenders.
The 21-year-old was also handed his first international call-up for Wales by Ryan Giggs in November last year. Speaking of the Manchester United legend’s influence on his fledgling career, James said: “Giggsy, as soon as I came into the Wales set up, had ambitions for me. The way he brought me and a lot of other youngsters through has been amazing.
“He spoke to me when I first signed for United. His advice was to be myself, which is what I will try to do. He wasn’t a bad player was he? What he did at Manchester United was amazing. Every young winger looks up to a person like him. He was playing in the Premier League until he was 40 and he was still beating players. Credit to him, the way he looks after his body.
“It is amazing for me, when I go away on internationals, to learn from people like him. He is obviously someone I aspire to be like.”
Giggs, a product of the Manchester United academy, went on to have a decorated career with the Red Devils. The current Wales national team manager accumulated over 900 appearances for the Premier League giants winning a multitude of honours, before hanging up his boots in 2014.
The fact that James aspires to have a career like Giggs at Manchester United bodes well for the club. If the Welshman goes on to enjoy even half the success of his national team manager during his time at Old Trafford, then the Red Devils’ investment in him will prove worthy of every penny.
