PSV Eindhoven’s Steven Bergwijn is willing to wait for Bayern Munich’s offer despite interest from Manchester United, his agent has claimed.
Manchester United’s pursuit of quality players to add to their attack does not seem to be going anywhere now. One of their top targets Steven Bergwijn is also considering his options before making a call on joining Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s side this summer. In an interview with ESPN, the PSV Eindhoven star’s agent has claimed he is waiting on Bayern Munich’s offer.
Bergwijn was one of PSV’s standout stars last season. His impeccable record included 14 goals and 12 assists, a return that has put him on the radar of some of the biggest clubs in England and Europe.
Bergwijn has courted serious interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils were ready to make their move as early as January, although the Dutch giants were unwilling to do business then. When the season ended, United retained their interest, only to be chased by several other top clubs, including Bayern Munich, in the chase for the young PSV talent.
United had reportedly stepped up their efforts to bring Bergwijn to Old Trafford in the last few weeks. But, the player and his agent’s heads seem to have been turned by Bayern Munich’s potential interest in him.
Hence, United now face a tough prospect to lure Bergwijn as his agent Fulco van Kooperen’s comments hinted at the Dutchman’s preference to join the Bavarians over other clubs, claiming that they are prepared to wait on their offer.
“We have never, never said we are losing patience. Bayern are a great and huge club, and it’s great they like Steven. They can take all the time they need. On the other side, it’s not a secret there are more clubs which like him.”
Manchester United have bolstered their attack by signing Daniel James this summer. But, the issue of the right wing remains, with James predominantly a left-sided attacker. And so, pursuing a move for Bergwijn, who is equally adept at playing on either flank, makes sense.
Bayern Munich, on the other hand, have been hot in pursuit of several young stars to strengthen their side to replaced the recently departed Frank Ribery and Arjen Robben. Leroy Sane and Ousmane Dembele have been top targets for the Bavarians thus far, but Bergwijn is also reportedly on their radar.
On a personal level, the move to Bayern makes a great deal of sense, also considering the fact that there is Champions League football on offer. As things stand, Bergwijn and his camp are willing to wait patiently for Bayern Munich to come in with their offer. It now remains to be seen if Manchester United now either speed up their pursuit or look elsewhere at other potential targets.
