Manchester United are reportedly set to offer a new contract to youngster Luca Ercolani, who is drawing widespread interest from Italy.

Manchester United surprised their fan base with some of the names on their list of released players for the summer. But, the Red Devils are keen on retaining the other young talents at the club. Luca Ercolani is attracting interest from his homeland Italy but is set to be offered a new deal by the Premier League club, according to The Mirror.

The report names the likes of Bari, Empoli, SPAL and Ascoli as suitors for Ercolani, who is reported to be on the radar of several Serie A and Serie B clubs. The youngster is set to be offered a two-year deal by Manchester United, which will prolong his stay at the club till 2021.

Luca Ercolani joined Manchester United in 2016 from Serie D side Forli after a successful trial. The youngster has since had a slow but sure upward graph. The 2018-19 season saw him be a regular for Manchester United in the UEFA Youth Cup while also notching up some appearances for the Under-23 side.

The central defender was praised by former United Under-18 manager Kieran McKenna, who is now a first-team coach at the club. McKenna highlighted the 19-year-old’s attitude while admitting that Ercolani had to bide his team for opportunities to come his way.

Ercolani though, is one of a host of players whose Manchester United deal expires at the end of June. But, interestingly, the Italian has not been named in the list of released players, with the report stating that United are set to offer the 19-year-old a new two-year contract.

Manchester United have released Tyrell Warren and Regan Poole is set to complete his transfer to MK Dons. This leaves Lee O’Connor and Max Taylor as the only centre-back options in the Under-23 side. As far as the full-backs are concerned, Demetri Mitchell and George Tanner are the only natural options.

So, retaining Ercolani makes sense for Manchester United. Also, the Italian could accept United’s contract, with the youngster likely to be handed extended playing time for the Under-23s in the upcoming season. On the other hand, moving to one of the Serie A or Serie B sides will probably enable him to taste first-team football.

It will be interesting to see how things develop for Ercolani. The Italian has a choice at hand – he can choose to remain patient and agree an extension at Manchester United or explore the prospect of a return to Italy.
