Manchester United star Romelu Lukaku has praised Antonio Conte amid speculations linking him with a move to Inter Milan this summer.
It has been quite an eventful transfer window for Romelu Lukaku so far. The Manchester United star has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford after a turbulent campaign, with Inter Milan one of the potential suitors. And the Belgian international has further fueled the exit rumours by praising Inter’s newly appointed manager Antonio Conte – as quoted by ESPN.
It is believed that the ex-Chelsea boss is keen on securing the services of Lukaku as he prepares for a potential squad overhaul this summer. And the Manchester United striker has indirectly responded to those speculations by claiming that the Italian is the “best manager in the world”.
The Manchester United striker said, “With the transfer of [Cristiano] Ronaldo, I think the Italian league is now coming back. Antonio Conte going back to Inter Milan, which is really good because he is, to me, the best manager in the world.”
This could serve as a massive boost for Inter Milan, who are preparing for life without Mauro Icardi next season. The Argentine international fell out with the club earlier this year and could be on his way out of San Siro this summer, which could leave a large hole in the attacking department.
The Nerazzurri have Lautaro Martinez as their only other reliable option in the centre-forward position. The 21-year-old has done well, scoring six goals and providing two assists. But, he has played very little football, amassing just over 1,300 minutes of league football this past season.
Martinez’s lack of experience at the highest level of football means Inter could be benefitted with the addition of Lukaku. The Belgian international is a world class attacker, hardened by years of experience in the top-flight football.
He has notably made over 250 appearances in the Premier League and has attained an excellent scoring record as well, amassing 113 goals. Hence, the Manchester United striker is a viable option for Conte’s men next season. As for Manchester United, the potential departure of Lukaku could serve as a blessing in disguise.
Newly appointed manager Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer has already addressed his wish to build a team around young and hungry players next season and Lukaku’s lack of mobility coupled with his inconsistency could prevent the Norwegian from instigating an identity to the United side next season.
The Red Devils reportedly value Lukaku at around €70 million, which makes sense given the quality of the player. And Inter may well be able to meet their asking price, thanks to the financial backing from Chinese investors – money United could utilise in funding move for their transfer targets this summer as Solskjaer plots a complete squad overhaul.
Signing a defender, midfielder and a Lukaku replacement is reportedly a priority for Manchester United in the event of the Belgian’s potential departure. Aaron Wan-Bissaka, for one, has been linked with a move to Old Trafford recently and the sale could surely help them quickly finalise a deal for the English international.
