Manchester United are reportedly negotiating with as many as three clubs, as they look to offload Italian international Matteo Darmian this summer.
According to a report from ESPN, Manchester United are intent on offloading Matteo Darmian in the summer transfer window and to that end, are in talks with three clubs over the possible sale of the Italian defender.
Darmian joined Manchester United in the summer of 2015, arriving from Serie A outfit Torino in a £12.7 million deal. Having been a regular in the first-team under then manager Louis van Gaal, the Italian slipped down the pecking order since Jose Mourinho took over and has struggled for game time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as well.
Darmian managed just seven appearances across all competitions in the 2018-19 season, with veteran Ashley Young and Diogo Dalot being ahead of him in the pecking order. And with Manchester United targeting a summer move for Crystal Palace star Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Darmian’s time at Old Trafford surely seems to be nearing an end.
And the report from ESPN claims that Darmian has emerged as a subject of interest for three clubs, one being Valencia from La Liga, while the other two are unnamed clubs from Serie A. Manchester United are believed to be in talks with all the three teams over a transfer fee, the report adds.
Reports of Valencia’s interest in the 36-time capped Italian international emerged last week, with the La Liga heavyweights keen on strengthening their roster in the right-back position. They will now have to battle with two clubs from Darmian’s homeland if they are to seal the transfer.
Darmian was believed to be keen on a return to Italy last summer itself, amid interest from the likes of Juventus and AS Roma, but Mourinho decided to hold on to him given that Dalot had arrived at the club carrying an injury and lacked experience at the top level.
However, with Solskjaer now open to sanctioning a sale, a return to his homeland is definitely going to appeal to the 29-year-old. Although, the possibility of playing in the UEFA Champions League could sway Darmian’s decision towards a transfer to Valencia.
Darmian is contracted with Manchester United till 2020, after the club decided to trigger a twelve-month extension option in his deal earlier in January. But, it seems like curtains will fall on his spell at Old Trafford this summer and it remains to be seen if he ends up returning to Italy or decides to move to Spain to link up with Valencia.
