PSV star Steven Bergwijn is one of the names reportedly being considered by Manchester United as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer prepares for a summer of rebuild.
The Sun claim that Steven Bergwijn is on the radar of Manchester United. The Red Devils are considering several options to strengthen their wings ahead of the new season and have reportedly shortlisted the PSV sensation as one of the many targets to consider for the transfer window.
The report also mentions Nicolas Pepe, who has been linked with several clubs of late, as a player of interest for Manchester United. While the two aforementioned stars have been named as potential targets, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seems to be reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Swansea City winger Daniel James.
Formerly a part of the fabled Ajax youth setup, Steven Bergwijn joined PSV at an early age in the summer of 2011 after reports of a tiff with a youth trainer at Ajax. It has since been gradual climb up the age group ladder, with Bergwijn making his senior debut for the Eredivisie side in 2014-15.
But, it wasn’t until the 2016-17 season that the winger managed to become a regular at PSV. Gradually improving his return season by season, the 2018-19 campaign has been his best to date, with 14 goals and 12 assists in the league alone. His blazing form in Netherlands seems to have caught Manchester United’s attention.
Bergwijn is not a new name for Manchester United fans. The Dutch sensation was previously linked with the Premier League giants during the January transfer window. The move back then, did not quite make sense, with Manchester United overstaffed on the left wing and Bergwijn being a predominantly left winger himself.
But, over the course of the 2018-19 Eredivisie campaign, Bergwijn has produced the same number of goals and assists from the right wing as the left, despite 3 fewer appearances on the right side. The statistics prove that the 21-year-old might just be able to solve the right wing crisis at Manchester United.
Also, the move makes more sense now, even as a prospect for the left, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looking to move Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial off the books, according to reports.
A recent report from Voetbal International states that PSV are set to target Steven Berghuis to replace Bergwijn, which could boost Manchester United’s hopes of landing the 21-year-old, despite interest from Ajax as well.
While no fee has been mentioned anywhere thus far, Manchester United would fancy a move for Bergwijn, who will definitely come cheaper than Borussia Dortmund sensation Jadon Sancho. The statistics produced by the two stars are similar, although, Sancho is admittedly operating in a more competitive league.
