The demand for Denis Suarez is expected to increase after Barcelona put the midfielder for sale, as Atletico Madrid and others are showing an interest.
Denis Suarez’s time on loan at Arsenal did not go according to plan after the midfielder’s tenure in London was cut short due to injury. Spanish publication Sport are reporting of movement in the summer window for Suarez, with Atletico Madrid among other clubs across Europe showing an interest in signing the midfielder.
Suarez was a target for Unai Emery at Arsenal during the January window, and the manager duly brought the 25-year-old to the Emirates albeit on a short term basis. Emery was hoping Suarez gives Arsenal an extra dimension in the second half of last season, but the Spaniard soon became a forgotten name in North London.
Barcelona had asked Arsenal for around €20 million, although the Premier League club were unwilling to pay. With no mandatory purchase options inserted in his loan deal, Arsenal decided against signing him permanently. Barcelona, however, ensured the safety of their investment by agreeing a one year extension with Suarez before he left for Arsenal.
After injury cut short his season, the midfielder has since recovered from the troublesome groin problem back in Barcelona. The Catalans have placed Suarez on sale during the summer window, and the midfielder does not have shortage of suitors. Atletico Madrid are the biggest of the list of clubs interested in the Spaniard, with Valencia also ready to rival the Madrid side for his signature.
Napoli in Italy and German club Borussia Dortmund are also keeping tabs on his situation. Dortmund in particular are keen on Suarez after former teammate, Paco Alcacer’s enormous success at the Westfalenstadion and want to integrate the midfielder in their squad.
However, if Suarez decides to continue his career in Spain, then Atletico would appeal as a possible destination as the club regularly challenges for the La Liga crown as well as progress in the Champions League. The other team mentioned is Valencia from Spain, where manager Marcelino knows Suarez well from their time together at Villarreal.
Atletico boss Diego Simeone would also want Suarez to form a part of a long term future at the club as the manager sees a long career for the 25-year-old. He could form a good partnership in midfield with the likes of Koke and Saul Niguez. Suarez is capable of playing as part of a central midfield three while also somewhat excelling as part of an attacking trio up front.
Barcelona are demanding €20 million for the midfielder and it does comes across as a reasonable sum. Suarez has the talent to thrive in any side across Spain or Europe. It is unfortunate things did not work out for the midfielder in the Premier League, while at Barcelona, the system did not suit his style of play. He may thrive at Atletico or Valencia for that matter, but it remains to be seen of either of those side try and sign him in the summer.
