Transfer News: Fulham sensation Ryan Sessegnon prefers Tottenham move over Manchester United

Teenage sensation Ryan Sessegnon reportedly favours a summer transfer to Tottenham over Manchester United, following Fulham’s relegation.

According to a report from the Evening Standard, Fulham wonderkid Ryan Sessegnon could be on the move in the upcoming summer transfer window. The 18-year-old is a transfer target for Premier League giants Manchester United, but reportedly favours a switch to Tottenham Hotspur, who are also interested in signing him.

Sessegnon first burst onto the scenes with Fulham during the 2016-17 campaign and was one of their most important players during the 2017-18 term, when the Cottagers earned promotion back to the Premier League through the Championship playoffs. The 18-year-old netted 16 goals and set up 8 more, helping Fulham back to the top-flight.

Fulham finished 2018-19 second from bottom, getting demoted back to the Championship, while Sessegnon failed to reach the heights of the previous season. The managerial changes that happened at the Craven Cottage during the season had an impact on his form. But, the teenager still finished with 2 goals and 6 assists from 35 games in his debut Premier League campaign.

Despite not enjoying the same success as last season, Sessegnon’s stock still remains very high as a number of clubs across Europe like Juventus and PSG are monitoring the teenager, along with Tottenham and Manchester United.

Tottenham have had a long-standing interest in the England Under-21 international. While they have Danny Rose and Ben Davies as left-back options, Sessegnon’s ability to play higher up the field as a winger would be of appealing for Mauricio Pochettino’s side. However, they are not expected to make a formal approach until the Champions League final against Liverpool is out of the way.

Manchester United too have been monitoring Sessegnon’s progress for quite some time now. Given that they don’t have a reliable back-up for Luke Shaw in the left-back slot, a move for the promising teenager with immense potential makes a lot of sense.

But, Sessegnon seems to prefer a move to Tottenham over Manchester United. The 18-year-old is attracted by the prospect of playing Champions League football and wants to stay in London. The chance of playing under the tutelage of Pochettino, who has done wonders for many young English players like Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Eric Dier etc., is believed to be a major factor as well.

Sessegnon will be entering the final year of his contract this summer and while Fulham would ideally want to hold on to him, the fact that they could lose him for a minimal compensation fee a year later could force their hand. The Cottagers have slapped a £40 million price tag on the teenager.

A swift return to the Premier League seems to be on the cards for Sessegnon. But, it remains to be seen if he ends up getting his dream move to Tottenham in the summer.
