Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane is reportedly unhappy with Luka Modric’s displays this season and will consider selling him in the summer window.
As per a report from Spanish publication AS, Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric could be allowed to leave the club in the summer, as manager Zinedine Zidane is not convinced that the Croat will have much to offer to his side moving forward next season.
Modric arrived at Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur back in 2012 and has gone on to have a stellar spell with the La Liga giants. During his stint in the Spanish capital, the Croatian international has racked up over 300 appearances, winning a La Liga title and as many as four UEFA Champions League trophies.
Modric has been integral to the immense success that Real Madrid have tasted in this decade. Last season was particularly eventful for the 33-year-old as he helped Los Blancos to a third consecutive Champions League trophy, while leading Croatia to the finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, post which he went on to win the Ballon d’Or award.
However, the 2018-19 campaign has been quite an underwhelming one for Modric. The Croat started off slowly, feeling the after-effects of his exertion in the World Cup and hasn’t been able to get going at all. So far this season, the former Spurs midfielder has netted just four goals and set up eight more from 44 matches in all competitions.
This has seemingly left manager Zinedine Zidane unimpressed. The Frenchman returned to the Real Madrid hotseat only nine months after leaving, with the club in a difficult situation after the sackings of Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari.
Zidane has had a good look at the players available at his disposal over the past couple of months, during which the results haven’t improved a great deal for Real Madrid. The manager is keen on revamping his squad ahead of the summer, in particular the midfield department that has misfired this term and as per the report, Modric could be one of the casualties of the planned overhaul.
Zidane believes that the 33-year-old is past his prime and will not be able to perform at the standards he has set for himself in the past seasons. Moreover, with the Frenchman keen on infusing more youth into the team by signing Paul Pogba from Manchester United and Tottenham star Christian Eriksen, he sees no place for Modric in the squad going forward.
Modric had his head turned last summer amid serious interest from Inter Milan, but does not intend to leave Real Madrid now, according to the report. However, with the manager not happy with his contributions this term, a move away from the Bernabeu could very well be on the cards for the Ballon d’Or winner.
