Manchester United are willing to pay half of Alexis Sanchez’s massive £26 million wages in order to secure a move away from Old Trafford for him in the summer.
As per a report from Daily Mail, Manchester United are prepared to pay 50% of Alexis Sanchez’s salary in order to offload him from the club in the summer transfer window and free up their wage bill for potential new arrivals.
Sanchez arrived at Manchester United from Arsenal in January last year in a move that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan move the other way. The 30-year-old was handed a mammoth contract by the Red Devils worth £500,000-a-week including bonuses, which amounts up to £26 million-a-year.
But, Manchester United’s investment has hardly paid off as Sanchez has looked a pale shadow of his former self, struggling for form and fitness throughout his spell at Old Trafford. Till date, the Chilean has featured on 44 occasions for the Red Devils in all competitions, coming up with a paltry return of 5 goals and 9 assists.
With Manchester United eyeing a major squad revamp ahead of the next season, it is important they free up their wage bill for the new arrivals, which would mean they will have to offload players in the summer. And with Sanchez not seemingly a part of the plans going forward under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he is considered to be expendable by the club.
However, his monumental wages are sure to hamper Manchester United’s plans of offloading him, which is why they are willing to pay half his current salary in order to help him secure a transfer away from Old Trafford come summer.
Manchester United are ideally hoping to send the Chilean out on loan for a season as they believe that they would be better-placed to negotiate an exit a year later, especially if he finds his best form again. Such a scenario would not only increase the number of suitors, but also help the Red Devils recoup most of the transfer fee they invested in him.
The 20-time English champions prefer that Sanchez joins a club abroad rather than moving to a direct Premier League rival. Serie A champions Juventus had been credited with an interest in Sanchez. However, given the plethora of options in their attacking ranks already, a move to Turin does look improbable.
Along with Juventus, there has been some interest from Serie A heavyweights Inter Milan, but they were apprehensive about a move, owing to the attacker’s wages. However, now that Manchester United are willing to pay half his salary, a transfer could be on the cards.
Paying £13 million-a-year for a player who will not even be at the club is far from an ideal scenario for Manchester United. But, the fact that they will be freeing up £250,000-a-week on their wage bill would be a big positive, as they look to boost up their squad next summer. All in all, Sanchez’s time at Old Trafford seems to be nearing an end.
