Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready to rival Everton in the pursuit of Portuguese midfielder Andre Gomes, who is likely to leave Barcelona in the summer.

According to Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are mulling over a move for FC Barcelona’s Andre Gomes, who is currently on loan at Everton. The Lilywhites are keen to bulk up their midfield options in the summer and Gomes has been identified as one of their prime candidates.

The Portuguese international has impressed onlookers since making a season-long loan move to Everton last summer. However, Gomes is still likely to be deemed surplus to the requirements by Barcelona head coach Ernesto Valverde for next season, meaning the Catalan giants could cash in on the midfielder in the summer.

This has put Spurs on red alert, along with league rivals Everton, who, in turn, are determined to sign Gomes on a permanent basis next season. But, the North London giants will have the cash to burn after failing to sign a single player in the previous two transfer windows, thus possibly giving them a slight edge in the pursuit of the Barcelona midfielder.

On the flip side, Tottenham’s lack of expenditure on the market has seen them struggle for resources, especially in the midfield department this season. Players like Eric Dier, Victor Wanyama have suffered frequent injuries, while the departure of Mousa Dembele in January left a gaping hole in the Tottenham midfield that is yet to be fixed.

As a result, Mauricio Pochettino has often had to rely on the services of Moussa Sissoko and the young Harry Winks. Therefore, the addition of someone like Gomes could be useful as the Portuguese midfielder can not only help Spurs in their approach play but also provide additional support to the likes of Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli in the final third.

To that end, Gomes seems like a tailor-made fit for Tottenham as they aim to continue their push for the title next season. As for Barcelona, they will be more than happy to cash in on the Portuguese midfielder in order to make room for their transfer targets in the summer. The Blaugrana have already signed Ajax sensation Frenkie de Jong, who will join the Spanish outfit at the start of next season.

Barcelona are also reportedly plotting a free transfer for Manchester United star Juan Mata, whose addition to the team could dense the already crowded midfield. Thus, the chances of making an impact in the Barcelona first-team is close to none for Gomes, who could be an excellent signing for a team like Tottenham next season, or Everton for that matter, where he has already impressed.
