Real Madrid have reportedly decided to reignite their interest in Serbian international Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who currently plies his trade for Lazio.
According to TransferMarketWeb, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has re-emerged on the radar of Real Madrid. Los Blancos are looking to initiate a squad rebuild in the summer and have reignited their interest in the Serbian international with the aim of a summer move for the Lazio midfielder.
As far as midfielders are concerned, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is considered to be on the ‘cream of the crops’ list. The central midfielder arrived in Italy in 2015 and has successfully managed to become a powerhouse in Italian football, coincidentally gaining recognition and coming of age after Paul Pogba left the league in the summer of 2016.
Recognised as a player with similar skill set to Pogba, Milinkovic-Savic has been tipped to reach the same heights. But, while one lifted the World Cup trophy, the other failed to inspire his nation to a better finish, with Serbia bowing out in the Round of 16 phase.
Domestically as well, the 24-year-old has not been on the same wavelength as previous seasons, with a record of just 4 goals and 3 assists. The interest in him seemed to have quietened down. But, according to the report, Real Madrid have reignited their interest in Milinkovic-Savic ahead of the summer transfer window.
Real Madrid are in a spot of bother. Their squad has been lacking form and consistency, which has been captured brilliantly in the fact that the club has changed managers twice this season so far.
Out of the Champions League to Ajax despite a first leg lead and not in line to win any other trophy this season, Zinedine Zidane’s return could see Real revert to the plans the Frenchman had before he decided to vacate his position.
The midfield lacks the same grit as before. Luka Modric is ageing and by the looks of it, has become somewhat inconsistent. Toni Kroos has been a bit more consistent but has still been a pale shadow of his own self. Casemiro has been disastrous at times and it has really had an adverse impact on the team’s form as whole.
Given the fact that Milinkovic-Savic was one of the midfielders on Real Madrid’s radar previously and combined with the prospect that Paul Pogba has now reportedly decided to stay at Manchester United beyond the summer, the 24-year-old could be the man to reinvigorate the Real Madrid midfield.
The Serbian international’s mellow form could also mean Real Madrid are able to negotiate a lower fee than earlier, with the report stating that Lazio could let their star midfielder leave for €75 million.
Real Madrid are certain to shuffle their midfield around in the summer. And chances are, Milinkovic-Savic could be one of the players on his way to the Spanish capital.
