Manchester United are reportedly set to offer star striker Marcus Rashford a new bumper contract, as they look to fend off interest from Real Madrid.
As per a report from the Mirror, Manchester United are looking to double academy graduate Marcus Rashford’s wages to £150,000-a-week, who has been attracting strong transfer interest from European champions Real Madrid.
The 21-year-old England international has been in red-hot form over the past few weeks for Manchester United, ever since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over the reins from Jose Mourinho. Rashford has started all of the Norwegian’s five Premier League games in-charge, scoring four goals and setting up one more.
Rashford scored in three successive league games for the first time in his career, when he fired Manchester United to a vital 1-0 victory against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend. He has now scored eight times and set up six more in 26 matches across all competitions this term.
The English attacker’s recent run of impressive form hasn’t gone unnoticed, as Real Madrid are waiting in the wings hoping to pry him away from the Mancunian outfit.
Real Madrid have been lacking a spark in attack ever since former Manchester United man Cristiano Ronaldo left to join Juventus in the summer transfer window. Gareth Bale has flattered to deceive, while Marco Asensio has failed to step up and Karim Benzema too has blown hot and cold.
Brazilian teenage sensation Vinicius Junior has looked good in his debut campaign, but lacks the requisite experience at the top level to be the leading man for Los Blancos. And to address this issue, Real Madrid were believed to be looking at Manchester United’s Rashford as a potential target for the summer transfer window.
As things stand, Rashford would be entering the final twelve months of his contract with Manchester United at the end of the season, although the Red Devils have the option of extending it by a further year.
And in order to avoid a scenario where Madrid could capitalize on Rashford’s contract situation, the 20-time English champions have entered negotiations over a new contract with their star man. The new deal that Rashford is being offered would see his current wages of £75,000-a-week doubled to £150,000-a-week.
Despite being only 21 years of age, Rashford is set to make his 150th appearance for Manchester United this weekend, when they welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to Old Trafford.
Rashford is clearly enjoying life under Solskjaer, having been restored to a central role in the new regime and has emerged as one of the most important players leading Manchester United’s revival midway through the season. And it would be in the club’s best interests to ensure that the England international is tied down to a new contract at the earliest.
