Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is reportedly poised to a sign a new contract with the club that would see him double his current wages.
As per a report from The Sun, Manchester United superstar David de Gea’s contract situation is set for a resolution, with the Spanish international on the verge of penning a new long-term deal worth £400,000-a-week after bonuses.
The new deal, should de Gea sign it, would make him the world’s best-paid goalkeeper and place him alongside Alexis Sanchez as Manchester United’s highest earner.
The 28-year-old was in the final year of his contract with Manchester United, forcing the club to activate a 12-month extension option in his deal not very long ago. However, with negotiations over a new contract not bearing fruit for a considerable time, there were concerns that de Gea could be on the verge of leaving the Red Devils in the near future.
French champions Paris Saint-Germain were intent on signing the Spanish international to replace the 40-year-old Gianluigi Buffon. They were even willing to splash £60 million to land their man in the upcoming summer window. If a move failed then, Les Parisiens were understood to be happy to wait till the summer of 2020 to bring the shot-stopper on a free transfer once his contract ran out.
However, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, who happens to share the same agent as de Gea, had expressed confidence over the situation, stating that he expected the Spanish international to pen a new deal.
Speaking about his first-choice stopper last month, the Portuguese had said, “In this case, we have the best goalkeeper in the world and I know he wants to stay. I know his agent is happy to do what the player wants and I also know the board wants him to stay and they are working on that. Hopefully, sooner or later they reach a good conclusion.”
De Gea joined Manchester United from Atletico Madrid back in the summer of 2011. After facing struggles early in his spell at Old Trafford, the Spanish international has, in recent years, established himself as one of the finest goalkeepers in the game.
Till date, the 28-year-old has turned out 337 times for the 20-time English champions and has won a Premier League title, along with an FA Cup, a League Cup and a UEFA Europa League trophy. De Gea was the winner of the Premier League Golden Glove award for the 2017-18 campaign as well.
The ongoing season hasn’t been the kindest for the Spaniard, however. In just 22 appearances across all competitions in 2018-19 term, se Gea has already shipped in 31 goals, managing to keep just five clean sheets in total, a lot of the blame for which lies at the feet of an inept defence in front of him.
Despite the poor start to the season, there is no questioning the value that de Gea brings to this Manchester United side. And, the news that he is set to extend his stay at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future would come as a great boost for the club and the supporters.
