Manchester United superstar Luke Shaw is reportedly set to sign a new bumper contract with the club, after a brilliant start to the season.
According to a report from The Times, Manchester United defender Luke Shaw is set to pen a new long-term contract with the club, following his impressive start to 2018-19 campaign.
The 23-year-old England international, who joined Manchester United from Southampton in a £27 million deal in 2014, is in the final year of his contract with the Red Devils. And, the full-back is poised to sign a new five-year deal, which would see his wages increase from £100,000-a-week to £160,000 per week.
It has been a tremendous turnaround of fortunes for Shaw, who not very long ago seemed set to leave Manchester United. The Englishman had been frequently singled out for criticism by manager Jose Mourinho in the first two seasons of his stint as the current Manchester United boss.
The Portuguese, on multiple occasions, has questioned the left-back’s fitness levels and mental strength, leading to a strain in the pair’s relationship. However, they now seem to have buried the hatchet this season, as Shaw has established himself as the first-choice left-back at Manchester United.
In a season that has started on a gloomy note for the 20-time English champions, Shaw has been one of the rare bright spots. The 23-year-old has featured in 9 matches across all competitions for the Red Devils, scoring and assisting one goal apiece and was named Manchester United’s Player of the Month for August and September.
Shaw’s return to form at the club level saw him getting recalled to the England national team as well. The full-back featured in the Three Lions’ UEFA Nations League opener against Spain last month, but was not involved in the the recently concluded international break, having picked up an injury in the Red Devils’ 3-2 comeback win against Newcastle United earlier this month.
By signing the new deal worth £160,000-a-week, Shaw would go on to become Manchester United’s highest earning defender, eclipsing Marcos Rojo. Negotiations between the club and the player’s representatives are believed to have been underway for some weeks now and an agreement is understood to be imminent.
After an injury-ridden start to life at Old Trafford, which was followed by spells of inconsistent performances, the 23-year-old is finally starting to live up to the immense potential that he had shown early in his career. And, a new and improved contract is more than a just reward for the performances that he has been churning out this season.
