Transfer News: Real Madrid striker Borja Mayoral being chased by as many as 12 clubs

With Friday’s transfer deadline looming large, Real Madrid striker Borja Mayoral is wanted by twelve clubs, including Sevilla and Real Valladolid.

As per a report from Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Real Madrid forward Borja Mayoral could be set to leave the club before the transfer window closes in Spain on Friday, with twelve clubs queuing up to sign him.

The 21-year-old was set to be Real Madrid’s second-choice striker this season, behind Karim Benzema, following the summer exit of superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. Indeed, the player was promised a prominent role in the first-team by new manager Julen Lopetegui earlier this month.

However, the circumstances seem to have changed now, with Real Madrid confirming the capture of former striker Mariano Diaz from Olympique Lyon last night. The arrival of the Spanish-born Dominican Republic forward pushes Borja down the pecking order at the Santiago Bernabeu, which has left him seeking a move away before the transfer window slams shut.

A graduate of the Real Madrid academy, the 21-year-old Spaniard had a loan spell away from the club at Wolfsburg back in the 2016-17 season, before becoming a part of the senior team under Zinedine Zidane last term. He featured 24 times across all competitions, bagging 7 goals and setting up three more.

Los Blancos’ La Liga rivals Sevilla, who were close to signing Mariano before Real Madrid swooped in, are understood to be keen on signing the Spain under-21 international. The Andalusian side’s manager, Pablo Machin, hinted at the possibility of making a move for him.

“We all want things to go right. Borja Mayoral is a player I like, he doesn’t have as much experience as other players, but I like him,” Machin was quoted as saying earlier this week.

However, Sevilla will have competition from fellow La Liga outfit Leganes and newly promoted side Real Valladolid. An alternate report from AS claims that even Levante and Real Betis are in the hunt to sign the promising young striker as well.

Borja has three years left on his contract with the Merengues and any transfer away from the Santiago Bernabeu ahead of the January 31 deadline is likely to be a loan deal. Even if Real Madrid do offload him on a permanent basis, they are likely to insert a buyback clause, like they did with Alvaro Morata, when selling him to Juventus a few years ago.

There’s not much time left for the 21-year-old to secure a transfer away from the reigning European champions, with the transfer window in Spain set to close on Friday. With so much interest, it remains to be seen where the Spaniard ends up for the remainder of the season.
