Barcelona have reportedly identified German international Julian Weigl as a viable transfer target ahead of the next campaign.

As per a report from Spanish outlet Don Balon, current La Liga champions Barcelona are set to renew their interest in Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl.

The Catalans are understood to be in the market for a new central midfielder this summer, following the summer departures of Paulinho and Andres Iniesta, while Andre Gomes is also set for an exit from Camp Nou. They have already managed to land Brazilian midfield sensation Arthur from Gremio, but remain in the hunt for more replacements.

Barcelona have been credited with an interest in Dutch youngster Frenkie De Jong, and have reportedly made two offers for him already. But with Paris Saint-Germain also entering the chase for the 21-year-old Ajax midfielder, they are looking at potential alternatives and Weigl has emerged as a viable option.

This is not the first time the Blaugrana are being linked with a move for the Dortmund midfielder. There were reports of the Catalans making a €50 million move for the 1860 Munich academy graduate last summer as well.

Since joining the German outfit three years ago, the 22-year-old has grown into one of the most promising young midfielders across Europe.

Weigl has gone on to feature on 127 occasions for BVB, scoring twice and setting up one more, winning a German Cup during his time at the Signal Iduna Park. 34 of his 127 appearances came in the 2017-18 campaign.

Following Sergio Busquets’ underwhelming displays for Spain in the recently concluded 2018 FIFA World Cup, there is a feeling that the midfield anchorman is past his prime. And Weigl would be the most ideal replacement for the Catalan midfielder, when his time at Camp Nou nears its end.

Barcelona are not the only club interested in the midfielder’s services, with Premier League champions Manchester City also in the race along with European champions Real Madrid.

Blessed with a combination of an excellent range of distribution and great tactical understanding of the game, the 22-year-old will only keep getting better from hereon.

Weigl has still three years left on his contract with Dortmund and is likely to command a large transfer fee. But given his rapid growth and the immense potential that he has shown so far in his career, the German midfielder would prove to be worth every penny for Barcelona, should they manage to sign him this summer.
