Barcelona are showing an interest in Hector Herrera and are reportedly set to duel it out with Arsenal to land the FC Porto star.
Don Balon are reporting Barcelona’s interest in another Mexican international – another who has been a standout at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Hector Herrera has been on the radar of quite a number of clubs, the biggest being Arsenal so far this summer. But, Barcelona’s entry is sure to add an extra layer to the transfer rumour.
Hector Herrera has always been an industrious midfielder. But, the 2018 FIFA World Cup seems to have finally shed some warranted limelight on him and his ability. The Mexican international was instrumental in keeping the German midfield controlled to an extent and overall, gave a good account of himself in Russia.
Herrera is expected to leave FC Porto this summer. There has been a lot of interest from the Premier League, with several mid-table clubs vying for his signature. But, Arsenal and Barcelona are the two biggest profiles that are set to battle for the 28-year-old.
Arsenal have been actively looking for reinforcements in the current transfer window. With the holding midfield position all but barren, Unai Emery was looking at Hector Herrera as a bargain buy, with reports that the player will be available for as cheap as €15 million.
But, Arsenal are set to announce the capture of Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi, both of whom will reinforce the midfield. Guendouzi in particular, is thought to be the answer to Arsenal’s holding midfield problems and the fact that he will be arriving for a nominal fee makes the deal a huge steal for the Gunners.
Barcelona though, are set to oversee a major overhaul of their midfield. Paulinho has departed and there are reports of a potential Premier League move for Andre Gomes. Ivan Rakitic has emerged as an option for Bayern Munich, making midfield reinforcements the club’s priority.
Arthur has arrived and is likely to be one of the starters. But, the addition of a cultured and experienced star like Herrera will aid Barcelona’s cause to compete for and bag the top honours once again in Spain.
One surprise in the report from Don Balon is the fee that has been quoted. While the earlier reports suggested a €15 million bid would be enough, the Spanish publication are speculating that FC Porto have now increased the asking price to €45 million to cash in on Herrera’s World Cup displays.
The report states that, even at the increased price tag, Herrera would be a brilliant signing for Barcelona in order to inject some experience after Andres Iniesta’s departure, especially if Rakitic ends up leaving as well.
Hector Herrera is sure to be on the move. And right now, he looks to be the flavour of the market. €45 million though, sounds a tad too steep for the 28-year-old. We are sure to see Herrera switch loyalties this summer. But, it will likely be for a fee that is considerably lower.
