Jon Flanagan is reportedly set for a medical at Rangers before reuniting with his former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard at pre-season training in Malaga.
According to a report by Daily Mail, Jon Flanagan is set to reunite with his former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard, who recently got appointed as the new manager at Rangers. Flanagan is reportedly going through a medical test at the Glaswegian club and will join Gerrard in their pre-season training camp in Malaga.
Jon Flanagan was a former teammate of Gerrard at Liverpool and was an integral figure for the Reds during their Premier League title challenge four years ago, making 23 starts in the league as they finished second behind Manchester City.
His performances in that season led him to earn his international debut, which remains his only appearance for England in a friendly against Ecuador, although after that season he hardly appeared at Anfield again, especially due to the advent of Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold on either flank.
Flanagan, who climbed the ranks at Liverpool’s youth setup, was thought to be the future star at the Merseyside club. But, injuries played spoilsport, bringing his progress to a halt. He subsequenrlt failed to impress during his loan spells at Burnley and Bolton, and found no way back in the Reds’ squad
Moreover, he also had issues off the field after he was given a 12-month community service order after admitting to assaulting his girlfriend. Now, Flanagan is a free agent after being released by Liverpool at the end of the last season.
However, Gerrard feels that he could be a valuable addition to the Rangers squad, having observed him closely during their time together at Liverpool. Add to it the zero transfer cost, and it would not do any harm to the Scottish club to sign Flanagan this summer, considering he has experience playing as a full-back on either flank.
The 25-year-old defender would become the seventh summer signing for Gerrard at Rangers. Moreover, according to Daily Mail, it is reported the talks have progressed well with the player and once he undergoing a medical, he is expected to join the squad in Andalusia for the pre-season.
A move to Rangers will provide Flanagan a chance to start afresh in Scotland. The transfer might just revive his career as Gerrard is said to be showing a lot of faith in Flanagan, as he looks to put the disappointing end to his Liverpool stint behind him.
