Highly-rated Manchester United and England U-21 goalkeeper Dean Henderson has penned a new contract with the club.

Manchester United’s young shot-stopper Dean Henderson has signed a new contract with the club that will run until at least June 2020, with the option of a further year, the club have confirmed on their official website.

The 21-year-old goalkeeper, who has been on the books of the 20-time English champions since 2011 having joined from Carlisle United, was in the final month of his existing contract and has now decided to commit his future to the club for the next three years.

Despite being held in high regard within the club, Henderson is yet to make his first-team debut for Manchester United. He has made it to the bench on a couple of occasions though, both coming in FA Cup, once in 2016 and once more in 2017.

Henderson has had loan spells away from Manchester United with Stockport County and Grimsby Town while he spent the entire last season with Shrewsbury Town in the EFL League One.

During the 2017-18 season, the 21-year-old went on to make 48 appearances for the Shrews, managing 19 clean sheets helping them to a third-place finish in the third tier of English football, although they missed out on promotion to the Championship. His performances with Shrewsbury, under pressure situations, had established him as a firm fan favourite at the club and saw him being named in the PFA League One Team of the Year as well.

Henderson had attracted a lot of interest from several clubs across England with newly promoted Premier League side Fulham believed to be one of the suitors, along with EFL Championship outfits Stoke City and Bristol City. However, their hopes to land the goalie on a free this summer have been dashed by him signing a new contract with United.

I’m really delighted, Henderson told MUTV, following the contract extension. Coming off the back of last season and playing games at Shrewsbury and having a good season there, to return to the biggest club in the world and put pen-to-paper again is a great achievement for me and my family. It’s another dream come true.

Henderson, who was a part of the England Under-20 side that won the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in 2017, will have a difficult task to break into the first-team at Manchester United though, with David de Gea, Sergio Romero and Joel Pereira all ahead of him in the pecking order at the Old Trafford.

And another loan spell away in the 2018-19 seems a strong possibility for the 21-year old, with any of the aforementioned clubs being a likely destination.
