Liverpool are taking a keen look at Gent winger Moses Simon, with Jurgen Klopp eyeing to increase the depth in the Reds’ attack before the upcoming season.
According to Liverpool Echo, Moses Simon is a player that has caught the attention of Jurgen Klopp as he scours the market for able attacking additions in order to increase the depth in the squad. The Nigerian international currently plies his trade for Belgian outfit KAA Gent.
Moses Simon was signed by Gent from AS Trencin for a marginal fee in January, 2015. Since the move, the winger has managed to record 136 senior appearances for the Belgian club. And while his return on the pitch is far from ideal, his age means there is still room for improvement.
Beyond the returns though, Simon’s unreal pace and penchant to hug the byline will be something that will add a different dimension to the attack to any side. The player suffered a heartbreak at the international level as he was excluded from the 23-man squad for the World Cup by Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr.
But, he could be set for some positive news at the club front, with Liverpool interested in the Nigerian international. Jurgen Klopp led the Reds to a wonderful 2017-18 campaign full of flavourful football. But, what will linger in the manager’s mind is the lack of trophies, which could be often chalked down to a lack of depth.
In attack, one can see the aforementioned. There are no quality options beyond Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, which was proven as Liverpool looked toothless on the pitch for several stretches in the Champions League final against Real Madrid after Salah went off injured.
While Liverpool have already snapped up Fabinho, reinforcements in attack are needed. Nabil Fekir, if he arrives, is also likely to be utilised in a manner like Coutinho – the 4th attacker and the 3rd midfielder. Thus, the Reds need to add quality players who can play a squad rotation role at Anfield.
Moses Simon could be the perfect target. With just one year left on his Gent contract, the Belgian outfit are reportedly willing to let the Nigerian international go for somewhere around £10 million.
£10 million would mean no real damage to Liverpool’s budget while being able to add a potent attacker within the ranks at Anfield.
