Premier League heavyweights Liverpool are reportedly pondering over a summer move for Schalke 04 midfielder Max Meyer.
According to a report in TransferMarketWeb, Meyer has emerged as one of Liverpool’s main transfer targets for the summer. He is said to be courting interest from a number of top European sides and will be available for free after his contract runs out in the summer.
Meyer, who has spent his entire senior career with Die Konigsblauen, had a very public falling out with the club’s hierarchy. In a recent interview, he stated that he felt like he was being ‘bullied’ by his boyhood club and no longer felt welcome at Veltins-Arena.
He then went on to state in no uncertain terms that he didn’t want to work with club chairman Clemens Tonnies and Director of Sport Christian Heidel. Meyer is said to have rejected two offers to extend his stay at Schalke and has subsequently been banished to the reserves.
It would suffice to say that it has been a disappointing end to the campaign, one in which he established himself as one of the most promising young holding midfielders in Bundesliga. However, with his contract running out at the end of the season, he will have no shortage of potential suitors.
Prior to this season, Meyer was largely used as a central attacking midfielder and occasionally on the flanks. Domenico Tedesco was then signed on as manager last summer and saw that Meyer had the potential to thrive in a deep lying playmaker role.
He has since blossomed into one of the finest young midfielders in the German top flight and has caught the eye of a number of top European sides. Liverpool could certainly use a player of his quality in the squad and he would be a great addition to Jurgen Kopp’s young side.
His vision, ability to read the game and pick out a pass are all great assets, but it is his no-nonsense work ethic and defensive work off the ball that make him a formidable proponent in midfield. With James Milner turning 33 soon and Emre Can expected to leave, it is a position that Liverpool need to reinforce in the summer.
Liverpool haven’t been able to replace the legendary Xabi Alonso 11 years after his departure, but Meyer may just the person they need to keep their midfield ticking. While he isn’t quite at the level of the legendary Spaniard, with that much talent at his disposal and his best years ahead of him, the possibilities are endless.
It now remains to be seen if Liverpool can fight off the competition to secure his signature, with Meyer highly likely to become a highly sought-after figure in the transfer market this summer.
