Jose Mourinho will have several big decisions to make when he picks his Manchester United side to face Brighton in the FA Cup.
Manchester United will take on fellow Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup at the Old Trafford on Saturday.
Jose Mourinho’s side will still be reeling from the 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sevilla during the midweek, that saw them get knocked out of the UEFA Champions League. And the Portuguese tactician will be hoping to mastermind a strong comeback against Chris Hughton’s side to advance to the final four of the FA Cup.
Ahead of the crucial fixture, Mourinho confirmed in his pre-match press conference that there were no players returning from injury and at the same time there were no fresh concerns for his side. “No, not yet. [The squad is] exactly the same [as Sevilla],” he said, when asked if any injured players were returning to the side.
That means, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ander Herrera, Daley Blind, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo are all set to miss out once again for the Red Devils on Saturday. However, it is very much likely that the manager will make a number changes to the side that started against Sevilla earlier this week.
Sergio Romero will start in goal for the Mancunians, replacing star man David De Gea for the cup game. Regular full-backs Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young could also be given a rest by the manager, meaning Matteo Darmian and Luke Shaw could start on either side of the centre-back pairing of Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling.
In the middle of the park, academy graduate Scott McTominay is very much likely to be handed a start against the Seagulls, after being left out of the midweek game. The youngster should, in all likelihood, be partnered by club captain Michael Carrick who is retiring at the end of the season.
Anthony Martial was also benched for the midweek game but should be reinstated in the starting XI for Saturday’s big game with the Frenchman expected to start on the right-side, while Marcus Rashford could be shifted out to the left-flank, with Juan Mata likely to be deployed as the central playmaker.
That would mean there is no space for January signing Alexis Sanchez, as well as club record signing Paul Pogba in the lineup for Saturday’s game, following the pair’s poor display against Sevilla.
Leading the line for Manchester United against Brighton will be the in-form Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian scored the consolation goal against Sevilla earlier this week and will be hoping to add to his tally of 24 goals for the season.
