Transfer News: Borussia Dortmund sign Barcelona youngster Sergio Gomez

Barcelona have lost out on another one of their young gems, with starlet Sergio Gomez moving to Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth around €3 million.

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed the capture of Barcelona youngster Sergio Gomez. The young midfielder has moved to Germany to pursue his footballing career away from the Nou Camp after the Bundesliga club activated the player’s €3 million release clause embedded in his Barcelona contract.

Sergio Gomez is the latest among a line of innumerable gems produced by the La Masia youth setup at Barcelona. The player had been with Barcelona since the age of 9 – he joined the club from local rivals Espanyol in July, 2010 – and had progressed at La Masia right till the point of even making his debut for Barcelona B.

The left-winger, who can also do a commendable job from attacking midfield, made two appearances for Barcelona B in Liga Segunda. The 17-year-old though, gave a better account of his abilities while representing Barcelona in the UEFA Youth League, with a goal to show for his efforts in a total of 3 appearances in the competition this season.

Sergio Gomez was heavily linked with a move to Manchester City in the summer of 2017. But, the Spaniard rejected the advances of the blue half of Manchester and looks to be elated to have secured a move to Germany. Borussia Dortmund have given several youngsters a quick step up the ladder and Gomez would hope for the same.

For now, the player will be plying his trade for Dortmund’s Under-19 team. But, he will train with the first-team regularly and is likely to be inculcated into the senior setup from the summer.

Dortmund Sporting director Michael Zorc highlighted as to why Dortmund had moved to acquired the player by activating his release clause and also stated the action plan to aid the 17-year-old’s progression.

“Sergio Gómez is undoubtedly one of the strongest players in his class worldwide. We have been interested in him for quite some time now and we are happy that he has decided in spite of the offers of many European top clubs for Borussia Dortmund. Sergio will be training directly with the pros and collecting match practice in our U19 by the summer.”

Sergio Gomez himself looked delighted at completing the move. €3 million in today’s market does not look like a lot, but spending it on a 17-year-old does provide a testament to the level of talent that Gomez is. Barcelona have lost yet another talent and chances are, the winger could become the next gem for Dortmund, who have recently made it a habit to target young talents of other top clubs.

Gomez would like to take inspiration from Jadon Sancho, who arrived from Manchester City in the summer, and is already a part of the first-team setup.
