Manchester United are ready to test Atletico Madrid’s resolve surrounding Jose Gimenez, with Jose Mourinho plotting a bid for the £60 million rated defender.

According to The Mirror, Jose Mourinho is looking to add another central defender to his squad, despite Marcos Rojo’s return to fitness along with the arrival of Victor Lindelof in the summer. And the Portuguese is plotting a bid to bring the Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez to Manchester United.

Victor Lindelof did struggle to impress the fans with his early outings. But, all that has changed after some strong performances in Europe combined with back-to-back solid displays in the Premier League against the likes of Newcastle and Brighton – a match which saw fans hail him as the second coming of Vidic at Old Trafford.

There are expectations that Lindelof will ultimately be able to convince Mourinho to pair him with Eric Bailly as the main centre-back duo for United. However, the arrival of another central defender might complicate proceedings for the Swede – something this report is hinting at.

Jose Gimenez had been able to establish himself as a key member of the first-team squad at Atletico Madrid. However, Diego Simeone seems to have decided to now stick to the pairing of Diego Godin and Stefan Savic, which has seen the Uruguayan restricted to just 6 appearances in La Liga.

With Gimenez continuously being in-and-out of the starting eleven at the Wanda Metropolitano, Atletico Madrid have now eased their stance on his unavailability and are prepared to listen to offers for the player. The report states that Los Rojiblancos are even prepared to negotiate at a price lower than the player’s £60 million release clause.

Gimenez is a talent that Mourinho has been tailing for quite some time and the Uruguayan has been linked with Manchester United almost every transfer window. There have been earlier reports claiming that the 22-year-old is interested in a move to Old Trafford and it could all point towards an imminent transfer.

United could find competition in the form of Juventus, who are yet to replace Leonardo Bonucci, following his move to AC Milan in the summer. It could be interesting as to how it will affect Lindelof’s status at Old Trafford, if Mourinho does opt to go in for Gimenez.

The move could even entice United fans, who are hopeful of Lindelof turning it around a-la Vidic, with the Serb also struggling early on to later on become one of the best centre-backs in United history.
