Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly turned their attention to Diego Simeone’s striker son Giovanni Simeone as the club eye their first summer signing

According to a report by The Mirror, Tottenham are eyeing a summer deal for Genoa forward Giovanni Simeone, who happens to be the 22-year-old son of Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone. Interestingly, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino and the senior Simeone played together as teammates for Argentina back in the day.

Giovanni scored 12 goals over the course of the previous campaign which was his first. He appeared 35 times for the Serie A side and managed to attract attention from clubs like Torino and Fiorentina with his impressive work-rate. Now, Spurs have joined the race to land a deal for the promising youngster, but they have not made a move yet.

Pochettino’s squad came close to winning the Premier League title for the last two seasons but narrowly fell short during the final stages of the campaign. After two seasons of being nearly there, the boss will be keen to add to the quality of the side and launch a stronger title challenge in the upcoming season.

The Spurs did not fare too well this transfer window though. While their rivals raked in big-money transfers, Pochettino has not secured any deals so far. Arguably, it could be said that the manager is aiming to retain his assets and avoid losing them to other clubs but, at the end of the day, he will need to bring in reinforcements.

Getting back to Giovanni, the youngster seems to fit the profile of a player who may be prepared to sit behind and learn from main striker Harry Kane in terms of age and development. He has only played one season of European football, and getting to learn from a striker like Kane can be an enticing opportunity.

Having said that, the young striker will not receive regular playing time, if the move goes through. It is quite clear that Pochettino doesn’t need strikers when compared to the other positions. Harry Kane has been a revelation for the Spurs and is continuing to be their front-man.

However, the England international will need back-up during the demanding months of Premier League and Champions League commitments and, as was evident last season, Vincent Janssen isn’t quite fit to be that. Hence, if Giovanni is looking to learn and nurture his skills as a footballer while acting as a deputy, the Spurs will be ideal.
