Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson is reportedly on the radar of Newcastle United, Burnley, Swansea City and Brighton this summer
According to a report by ESPN, out-of-favour Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson is a target for Newcastle, Brighton, Burnley and Swansea.
Jenkinson spent two seasons on loan at West Ham and is set to leave Arsenal this summer after appearing in just one game in the Premier League last season. He was also left out of the club’s list of players for their preseason trip to Australia and Asia, thereby fueling rumours further.
The 24-year-old did manage to recover from a serious knee injury last October and yet occupied a spot in the bottom of Arsenal’s pecking order which saw him lose out on a lot of precious playing time. He did get a chance to impress manager Arsene Wenger when Hector Bellerin was injured but he failed to do so.
When fit, Bellerin is Wenger’s first-choice right back and Jenkinson did have the opportunity to at least act as a back-up but with Mathieu Debuchy in the fray, that might not happen. Hence, it is quite clear that the defender will need to exit the club in order to find more time on the field.
The England international almost joined Crystal Palace during the January transfer window, but the move did not materialize at the last minute and Jenkinson found himself back on the sidelines at the Emirates stadium for the latter half of last season.
Arsenal are ready to let Jenkinson move on this summer and it seems to be the right time to do so since a number of Premier League clubs have made enquiries for the English defender. Newcastle, Brighton, Swansea City and Burnley will all be looking to bolster their defensive forces ahead of next season and have identified Jenkinson as an option.
Newcastle and Brighton are both in need of a quality right-back Jenkinson’s versatility in that area is also likely to help since he can operate anywhere across the back four. That will provide them with more options to shuffle the squad as and when needed.
The race to sign him will intensify since Swansea and Burnley are also in the market for a goalkeeper with Premier League experience and Jenkinson figures highly on their wanted lists to fill the position. It is likely that Arsenal are waiting for the best offer before agreeing on a sale.
Having said that, whichever club manages to sign him will be a good option for Jenkinson since he will receive adequate playing time and that is what he needs desperately at this point.
