Manchester United are reportedly keen on continuing their pursuit of Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier and are ready to spend £50 million on him.

According to a report by The Sun, Manchester United remain keen on signing long-time target Eric Dier for about £50 million after recently signing Everton striker Romelu Lukaku for £75 million. Dier is understood to have become a top target for the Red Devils with Chelsea refusing to sell Nemanja Matic to them.

A naturally versatile defensive player, Dier has been utilized as a defensive midfielder, a centre-back and a right-back on several occasions. He spent his youth as a Benfica player and was also loaned to Everton. However, he made his professional debut with Sporting Lisbon back in 2012.

Dier can perform the holding midfielder role quite well and has been one of the best in that position. Having joined Tottenham for £4 million in back in 2014,  has since made 135 first-team outings, scoring eight goals.

While he is clearly one of the most promising Premier League talents, it is evident that he needs to work on his focus on field. More often than not, Dier has been unable to maintain a consistent amount of concentration while playing on field.

He has his moments but his focus is not steady and that can be a bad thing if he is looking to last 90 minutes while making regular starts.

The 23-year-old England international has been on Jose Mourinho’s radar to improve United’s midfield situation who is believed to be still working on negotiations. The Red Devils need a strong midfielder since that will help them transition smoothly from defense to attack and boost their chances.

Dier is likely to get a permanent spot in the midfield for United and the player can potentially be a good fit since Mourinho requires cover in the defensive area of the midfield ahead of the new season. He could, thus, be the defensive midfielder who can put an end to United’s woes in that area.

It now remains to be seen if the Red Devils can manage to secure his services to continue their summer spending spree. If United fail to land a deal for him, it is reported that Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl is likely to be another alternative.
