Pepe has reportedly signed a two-year deal with Turkish giants Besiktas after being released by Real Madrid this summer.
According to a report by Daily Mail, Pepe has signed a deal with Turkish club Besiktas after spending ten years with Spanish champions Real Madrid. He has signed a two-year deal for on a free transfer since he was released by Los Blancos after his contract expired.
Pepe joined Real Madrid from Porto back in 2007 and has gone on to make 337 appearances for the Spanish club since. Last season in particular was a remarkable season for the entire team as they edged past Barcelona to win the La Liga trophy and crushed Italian giants Juventus to lift the coveted Champions League trophy.
The 34-year-old will join Besiktas with a wide range of experience. He has enjoyed success with his country Portugal as well as they finished third in the recently concluded Confederations Cup in Russia. The central defender was also a part of the team as they beat France 1-0 to win the Euro 2016 last year, for which he was named ‘Man of the Match’.
He leaves Real after winning three La Liga titles, two King’s Cup trophies and three Champions League triumphs in total, which are stellar numbers for any player.
While he is experienced and a strong defender, he is also known to be rather aggressive and violent on field. He rose to infamy for kicking out at Getafe’s Javier Casquero after fouling him and also for punching Juan Albin in a match back in 2009, following which he was banned for ten games.
Additionally, his notorious record also includes a red card for a lunge on Barcelona’s Dani Alves in a Champions League semi-final back in 2011.
Having said that, he will still depart Santiago Bernabeu as a fan favourite due to his passionate performances and consistent partnership with Sergio Ramos.
Signing Pepe for free seems like a good bargain for the Turkish club since he is undoubtedly a skilled central defender with a penchant for actively being involved in counter-attacks as well. He was also linked with a move to join French champions Paris Saint-Germain but the move to the Ligue 1 did not materialize.
