Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a shock move for Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs as Jurgen Klopp continues to seek solution for the left side of the defence.
Italian publication Calciomercato are suggesting that, as per the British press, Liverpool have laid their eyes on another Arsenal player apart from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Kieran Gibbs is already being touted to leave Emirates this summer and it seems Anfield has emerged as a shock destination for the Englishman.
Kieran Gibbs joined the Arsenal youth setup from MK Dons as a 14-year-old and has since managed to successfully break into the first-team. The player had his true breakout season at the club in the 2012-13 season and after a repeat the very next campaign, the full-back was touted to be the future for both club and country.
Gibbs also managed to make the senior cut for the Three Lions. However, his career has since taken a rather drastic downturn. The player who had become the first-choice is now not seen adequate even to provide competition to Nacho Monreal for the starting spot.
And with a year left on his current deal, the player has been linked with Crystal Palace, a move that broke down in January, mostly due to a disagreement between Gibbs and Palace over wages. The player, though, is likely to exit the club this summer.
And Liverpool could be about to snap up the Englishman. Jurgen Klopp’s left-back woes are not hidden. Alberto Moreno’s inability to impress and stamp his authority at the said position saw the German field James Milner being deployed and to a certain extent, successfully.
The Reds have been linked excessively with many prospects like Andrew Robertson, Josh Tymon and others. However, Gibbs, at 27, is a more experienced player and already has years of top level football under his belt. To add to everything, the player is likely available for a low price right now.
Liverpool may still add another left-back and could still go for Gibbs, especially with an experienced head needed to navigate the waters of UEFA Champions League along with the added pressure of improvement in the Premier League.
However, Arsenal may avoid selling to a direct league rival and could even seek to extend the player’s deal if Wenger needs adequate cover.
