Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly showing an interest in signing Fiorentina midfielder Matias Vecino as Eric Dier’s future remains uncertain.
According to a report by The Sun, the Spurs are keen on signing Uruguayan play-maker Matias Vecino in an attempt to replace Eric Dier if he chooses to leave the club this summer. They are believed to have approached the Serie A club in a bid to work out a deal for Vecino.
The Spurs are raiding the market for new signings this summer as they look to make a stronger push for the Premier League title next season. Last season saw them come close to winning the title but they had to eventually bow out to Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino will be determined to avoid that next season.
Vecino joined Fiorentina from Nacional in his native Uruguay back in 2013 and was loaned out to Cagliari and Empoli. Since then, he has risen gradually to become a vital first-team player in Florence. In fact, last season, the midfielder notched four goals and five assists for his club in a strong campaign.
The Uruguay international has played a key role in Fiorentina’s midfield playing 40 times in all competitions last season. He is essentially a defensive-minded play-maker and has the ability to provide depth in the Spurs’ squad.
Earlier reports strongly suggested that Eric Dier could exit this summer, and if that happens, Vecino can be the ideal replacement. However, Pochettino might have to spend some big bucks since Vecino could come at a price. He is under contract until 2021 with Fiorentina, so the Italian club are under no pressure to sell.
Central midfield has been a potential area of concern for Pochettino and Vecino seems like a good candidate to sign in order to address those issues.
Ever since they switched to a 3-4-2-1 system, Eric Dier dropped further into defence, and Harry Winks’ injury can only mean that there is a lack of depth behind Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama. That will be a gap that Vecino can easily fulfill considering his quality performances for Fiorentina.
Vecino is an all-round midfielder with immense quality on the ball and is physically and defensively strong. The Fiorentina midfielder is likely to become a priority target for Tottenham only if they lose Dier.
A lot of speculation has also been surrounding the futures of Borja Valero and Milan Badelj, which means Fiorentina may not be too keen to sell yet another midfielder, and Pochettino will have to work hard to close in on this deal.
