Liverpool rejected a bid from Huddersfield to re-sign goalkeeping sensation Danny Ward on-loan indicating that the player could be at Anfield for the new campaign
According to sources close to ESPN, Liverpool have rejected an approach from Huddersfield Town to resign Danny Ward following a successful loan spell at the Kirklees Stadium during the 2015-16 campaign.
The Welshman was a key figure for the Terriers during their unfancied journey through to the play-offs and eventual Premier League paradise. The club made Aaron Mooy’s transfer permanent on Thursday sealing a club record £10 million transfer for the Manchester City forward.
David Wagner fancies the Liverpool player and was looking to strike a loan move atleast if not a similar deal with Liverpool. And he must have hoped his long time friend Jurgen Klopp could do his side a favour.
That unfortunately isn’t the case if ESPN’s sources are to be believed. The Reds have European football to look forward to next season and although they have the likes of Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius in their books, Klopp is looking to hold on to Danny Ward as well for the 2017-18 campaign.
Amidst the club’s stuttering progress in their pursuit of the likes of Mohamed Salah and Ben Gibson, Klopp is looking to hold on to the talents that the club does have.
The Welsh international was an impressive figure in goal for the Terriers during their dream campaign in the Championship and was the penalty shoot-out hero against Sheffield Wednesday and Reading during the play-offs. It’s hence no surprise that the man himself conceded that he would like a move back to Yorkshire if his parent club allowed it.
But with Alex Manninger announcing his retirement last month, Klopp will be placing his sights on Ward to take the mantle with the promise that he will be given his fair chance to stake a claim for the No.1 role next season. Ward helped Huddersfield to 12 clean sheets during his 43 appearances last season averaging 1.6 saves per goal conceded.
The German boss will hope the Welshman can deliver similar performances and compete for his place at Anfield. Liverpool certainly had goalkeeping troubles last season with new season Loris Karius failing to nail his place in the team producing equally shaky performances as his Belgian team mate Mignolet.
But over the course of the season the latter has produced a more consistent run of performances and was a key figure behind the Reds push for the Champions League towards the end. Klopp has since stuck with Mignolet in goal but with a crowded fixture list next season, there is a possibility of rotation and Ward may well earn his opportunities there.
