Manchester United have reportedly called off their chase for Michael Keane despite an impressive season for Burnley, and signed Victor Lindelof instead.
According to a report by The Sun, Manchester United’s interest in re-signing Michael Keane from Burnley has come to an abrupt halt after the club secured a deal to sign Victor Lindelof. The Swedish defender is set to move to Old Trafford for £35 million while Everton might be next in line to sign Keane.
Lindelof recently played a starting role as Sweden beat France 2-1 in their World Cup qualifier in Stockholm and will be happy to know that he will be starting for the Premier League giants next season as Jose Mourinho continues to assemble a stronger squad.
Mourinho did sign Eric Bailly last year who went on to become one of the star defenders of the Premier League but Lindelof’s role at the club at this point will be a bit uncertain considering there’s players like Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and, of course, Bailly.
Lindelof does play as a centre-back but the Swede will have to accept a reduction in playing time after the move. There’s also been speculation that one or two of these names might exit United this summer. Chris Smalling hasn’t been on the best of terms with Mourinho and he has also been linked with a move outside the club.
Meanwhile, Michael Keane is looking for more regular football and the same could possibly be a reason why he did not return to Manchester United after joining Burnley in 2015. Keane has only gone from strength to strength for Burnley in the Premier League and won two England caps last season under Gareth Southgate.
However, it did seem like a major decision for the English defender since he is a United fan who came through the academy ranks at Carrington and also won the FA Youth Cup with Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard in 2011.
Everton will seem like the ideal choice for Burnley if he is looking at regular playing time since Keane will aim to get a chance of starting for England next summer. Ronald Koeman is believed to be impressed with his maturity and prowess at the back and will offer better opportunities when compared to Manchester United.
