Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has his sight set on Liverpool outcast defender Mamadou Sakho.
According to a report by Vital Spurs, Tottenham Hotspur are plotting a shock move to sign Mamadou Sakho after the defender spent half of last season on loan at Crystal Palace. Spurs, though, will have to shell out a sum of £ 30million to sign Sakho.
The 27-year-old defender spent the later half of last season on loan at Crystal Palace. He put up impressive displays there which boasted of his command in their back line. The solid defender was a crucial aspect in Palace’s success to secure a spot in the top flight next season.
Sakho’s defensive prowess helped the club to five wins and four clean-sheets from the eight Premier League matches he played in. In fact, he was even nominated for Crystal Palace’s Player of The Year Award despite playing in only eight matches. He eventually lost out to Wilfred Zaha.
The France international’s time with Liverpool, however, seems to be over. Jurgen Klopp has been determined to sign the highly-demanded Virgil van Dijk from Southampton. Earlier reports even suggested that Sakho might be of interest to Southampton if Liverpool’s pursuit of Van Dijk becomes successful.
Meanwhile, Crystal Palace were also reportedly interested in signing the player who has managed to have such a blistering form in just eight games and yet impacting the results of the Premier League standings. As Steve Parish looks to fight hard in the top flight next season, retaining a player like Sakho should have crossed his mind.
He will have to act fast though, since Tottenham Hotspur are in the fray now. Spurs can also lure him in with the prospect of Champions League football. Pochettino has been wanting to add another central defender to his squad with increasing reports which suggest that Kevin Wimmer will leave the club this summer.
Additionally, Kyle Walker is also rumoured to leave the Spurs as Manchester City have been trying hard to sign the defender and Pochettino will need quality defenders ahead of next season. The Spurs have struggled hard to convert their successful runs into a title win and with the pressure building up, Pochettino needs to bolster his forces.
