Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly spend £26million to sign Kevin Gameiro from Atletico Madrid this summer.
According to a report by The Sun, Gameiro is at the very top of Mauricio Pochettino’s wish-list for the transfer window. Spurs will be looking to make some serious changes after two good seasons which ultimately ended without winning any trophies.
Pochettino is determined to avoid a third season of the same saga and will be willing to splash extra cash to strengthen his team and win the coveted Premier League trophy next season.
Gameiro is a top-class striker with brilliant spells in Spain and France. He started his career with Strasbourg but then caught the attention of Paris Saint-Germain after scoring a number of goals. However, in 2013, he moved to Sevilla and scored 67 goals in 145 games.
The 30-year-old then transferred to Atletico for £27million but has struggled to live up to his potential. The forward also plays for the French national team and even scored twice in their 4-1 World Cup qualifying win over Bulgaria back in October.
Gameiro has managed to score 16 goals across competitions for Atletico this season but was often rotated with Fernando Torres to partner main striker Antoine Griezmann.
While he hasn’t enjoyed the best of runs, 16 goals are decent enough considering he was in and out of the starting XI. In fact, the only time he hit headlines this year was in February when he scored the fastest hat-trick in La Liga since 1995. He smashed three goals against Sporting Gijon in a matter of four minutes and 43 seconds.
However, Gameiro has not been in the best form lately and endured several dry spells with no goals. He did manage to contribute seven assists for his teammates over the course of the season.
With Atletico looking increasingly likely to sign Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon, a move to Tottenham will be best suited for the Frenchman since the Spurs are looking to make changes in their attack force.
If the deal goes through, Gameiro will be able to provide ample support for leading man Harry Kane in attack and bring an end to Vincent Janssen’s poor show for Tottenham. Meanwhile, Pochettino has also been eyeing Thomas Lemar from Monaco.
While the manager looks to bring in new players, a host of players from the Spurs are rumoured to move out. Moussa Sissoko, Danny Rose and Kyle Walker are a few players who have recently been linked to offers from other clubs.
