Manchester United are reportedly ready to trigger Antoine Griezmann’s release clause after their Europa League victory catapulted them into the Champions League.
According to a report by The Mirror, Manchester United will activate Antoine Griezmann’s £86 million release clause at Atletico Madrid.
Earlier, the biggest hurdle for United was the lack of a Champions League spot, but now they are confident in luring Griezmann – a long-time United target – to join the club.
Griezmann rose to prominence especially during the Euro 2016 wherein he was adjudged the Player of the Tournament – a result of his blistering performances for France. Although Portugal won the trophy, fans and critics alike lauded the 26-year-old for his skills.
He has spent three seasons at Atletico so far and managed to net 83 times in all competitions – 26 of them coming in the present campaign.
While Manchester United are poised to sign the France international, there have also been reports suggesting that Atletico’s rivals Real Madrid are also looking to sign a deal.
However, considering Griezmann’s style of play, he will be an ideal fit under Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford. Mourinho likes to counter and Griezmann is known for his speed. The manager also likes his players to be technical and Griezmann has a good first touch.
In fact, one of Griezmann’s greatest strengths is the range of his finishing abilities. His speed and quick movements can rip apart any defence, and he is capable of scoring all kinds of goals.
Griezmann can also spearhead United’s attack in Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s absence since Mourinho prefers having powerful players up front.
The Frenchman will also gel well with his fellow France teammate Paul Pogba. Ibrahimovic and Pogba have proven how a club can benefit from two superstars who have a healthy relationship off-field, and the same can happen with him and Griezmann.
Mourinho will recognize that Griezmann is an ideal player for Manchester United, and they need a quality attacker like him ahead of Champions League commitments next season.
Last season Paul Pogba was the mega-bucks signing and this time, it looks like it might be Antoine Griezmann.
