Transfer Rumour: AS Roma eye Arsenal’s Nacho Monreal as Monchi gets ready to take charge

AS Roma are in the market for a new wing-back, and have been eyeing Arsenal’s Nacho Monreal.

According to a report by TuttoMercatoWeb, Roma’s director of football Monchi is on the lookout for potential wing-backs, and is interested in signing Nacho Monreal from Arsenal. The departing Sevilla director wants Roma to sign Monreal, and will be happy to get the 31-year-old Spaniard to the Seria A club if Arsenal agree to the deal.

Arsenal are rumoured to be finalizing a deal to sign Schalke’s left-back Sead Kolasinac, and ever since then, speculations were rife about Monreal deciding to make a move out of the Emirates stadium this summer.

Monreal has also been linked to Athletic Bilbao last month, but he still has two years left on his contract with the Gunners. However, with the pressure building up on Arsene Wenger and given Monreal’s age, Arsenal are likely to be more than willing to let the defender go.

Arsenal signed Monreal back in 2013 from Malaga, and he has been a dependable player for them ever since. He does not engage in a lot of heroism on field, but he quietly does his job and gets noticed very rarely. In fact, he is easily one of the most underrated players in the club.

Being a defender does not stop him from getting forward, and he normally does so to swing in some crosses. However, in Arsenal’s recent shock 2-1 victory against Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final, Monreal scored a goal and that was probably one of his best moments for the Gunners.

Despite that, if Arsenal sign Kolasinac, Monreal will be given lesser priority and will benefit from a move to AS Roma instead as Monchi gets ready to take charge of the Italian club.
