Manchester United have emerged as the favourites to sign Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil, according to reports

According to the Sun, Mesut Ozil is set to rejoin forces with Jose Mourinho this summer as Manchester United have emerged as the favourites to sign the German World Cup Winner, who has failed to agree a new contract with Arsenal.

Ozil had been locked in contract talks with the Gunners for several months and despite his insistence that he was happy in London, the German has failed to agree a deal with the Gunners up until now and Arsene Wenger confirmed that contract talks had been put on hold until the summer.

The German international has endured a tough time in 2017, taking the brunt of criticism at Arsenal in the face of their poor performances – in particular their humiliating 10-2 exit to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League.

The fact that Arsenal have not convinced Ozil that they are capable of challenging for major honours coupled with the fact that the Gunners are reluctant to meet Ozil’s wage demands has led to reports over the last few months that Ozil would seek a move this summer, with Manchester United and Bayern Munich both interested in him.

As per the report, Manchester United are the clear favourites to sign the elegant midfielder, who former manager and now Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho once labelled the “Best No. 10 in the world.”

Mourinho will definitely be looking to vastly improve his squad after they have underperformed this season and if his comments in the past are anything to go by, the Porutuguese tactician is clearly a huge fan of Ozil.

However, Arsene Wenger stated a few months ago that Arsenal were no longer forced to sell their top players and the ill feeling between the club’s hierarchy and the supporters will turn into all-out mutiny should Arsenal sell yet another one of their top stars to Manchester United.

The Gunners will likely resist any moves for their key players from direct rivals but should Ozil push for a move to rejoin his former manager, their hand may be forced. However, they will likely be much more willing to sell him abroad meaning Bayern Munich might still have a say in the matter.
