Liverpool are eyeing a move for Schalke prodigy Max Meyer, according to reports
According to the Sun, Jurgen Klopp is considering a bid for Schalke’s 21-year old prodigy Max Meyer, who has been dubbed the “German Dele Alli.” Meyer has been attracting interest from the English Premier League for some time now and Liverpool were reported to be considering a bid for him back in November as well.
The Reds even attempted to sign Meyer back in the summer but the Sun state that they backed out of a move after being put off by his £40 million valuation. However, things have now changed as Meyer will only have a year left on his contract come the end of the season with the Sun claiming Liverpool will be able to sign him for half the price.
Meyer himself has admitted that he is unsure where his future lies beyond this season with contract negotiations reportedly stalling and the midfielder revealed that he is open to a move at the end of the season and spoke about how he is aware of Jurgen Klopp’s interest in him.
“ Everything is still open, it’s fifty-fifty – I can imagine both,” he said, in an interview with Bild. ” Up to now there have been no concrete discussions. I know from the past that he [Klopp] appreciates me as a player. After my first derby against Dortmund —scoring a goal when I was 18—he publicly expressed praise for me.”
It is no surprise that Klopp is monitoring his compatriot as the German tactician is always on the lookout for young, exciting talent, a tradition he has taken with him from Borussia Dortmund to Liverpool.
Meyer is highly-rated in Germany and is considered one of their most promising prospects. After flitting around several youth teams before finally joining Schalke as a 14-year old back in 2009, Meyer has risen through the ranks and quickly become one of their most important players at just 21 years of age.
This season, Meyer has scored 2 goals and picked up 4 assists in 32 appearances across all competitions. He is also registering an average of 1.29 key passes, 1.29 chances created 0.81 successful take ons and an 86% pass completion rate per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga this season, according to Squawka.
A speedster with fantastic dribbling ability, Meyer would fit right into Klopp’s style of explosive football and given the fact that his contract talks have stalled plus the obvious interest in him from the Liverpool manager, this is definitely a deal that could finally happen this summer.
