Arsenal are eyeing a move for former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, according to reports
According to Don Balon, the Gunners, along with Olympique Marseille, are considering a move for former Real Madrid and current Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas in the summer, with Casillas himself speculated to be prefering a move to London.
Casillas ended his legendary 16-year spell at the Santiago Bernabeu back in 2015 when he joined Porto, having left the club under somewhat acrimonious circumstances. Casillas’ form had dropped alarmingly and the former Spain international had begun to make several uncharacteristic errors.
His family even claimed that Florentino Perez was forcing the player out and many former players and fans heavily criticised Madrid’s handling of the goalkeeper’s exit, with some even calling for Perez to resign.
He has since somewhat reignited his career and has hit several milestones, including becoming the player with the most Champions League appearances in history, overtaking Paolo Maldini earlier this month.
Don Balon claim that Casillas’ partner would prefer a move to London and the goalkeeper himself is also attracted by the Premier League, while Arsenal will be on the lookout for a new reserve goalkeeper given the fact that David Ospina is likely to leave the club this summer.
Casillas will be available for free at the end of the season unless Porto choose to activate a one-year option they have on his contract but the 35-year old could push for a move should Arsenal show serious interest.
David Ospina is reportedly unhappy at being used only in cup competitions and will probably seek a move this summer and the Colombian international will not be short of suitors should he decide to move on.
Casillas would bring a wealth of experience to Arsenal who already have the hugely experienced Petr Cech but question marks still remain over his ability to play at the highest level as he has made a couple of errors for Porto this season as well.
The fact that he will be available for free will likely pique Arsenal’s interest, as the Gunners are always looking for value in the market. Wenger is also expected to significantly strengthen his side as he might be facing the departure of several players at the end of the season.
However, given Casillas’ age the Spaniard might be looking for a guarantee of playing time in what could be his final move and that is something that Arsenal may struggle to provide. Still, Don Balon state that the keeper’s preference is Arsenal so there is a chance this move could happen this summer.
