Fenerbahce are reportedly willing to offer Mesut Ozil an exit route out of Arsenal in the summer
According to Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph, Turkish giants Fenerbahce are preparing an offer for Arsenal’s attacking midfielder Mesut Ozil. The Gunners are understood to be willing to let go of the German, and Istanbul appears to be a likely destination for him.
Ozil has been offered an extension at the North London club as his contract expires at the end of next season, but he is unlikely to put pen to paper to a new deal. There is evident turmoil at the Emirates, with the fans growing disgruntled with manager Arsene Wenger.
The French boss has said that he has made a decision on his future, and that could be vital for Ozil to make his decision. Reports in January stated that Wenger will sign a new deal in March, and Ozil would follow suit and pledge his future to the club.
The Arsenal midfielder has been spotted in Istanbul on a number of occasions of late due to his connections with former Miss Turkey Amine Gulse, and Fenerbahce are expected to take advantage of this to offer Ozil a chance to redeem himself by tabling a bid for him in the summer.
Former Gunners forward Robin van Persie is under contract at Fenerbahce since his move from Manchester United, but is expected to leave at the end of the season, which could free a considerable chunk of the Turkish club’s wage bill to land Ozil.
After enjoying an illustrious stint at the Emirates, Ozil has become more of a liability to Wenger’s side this season. His performances have plummeted considerably and has tended to go missing in most of the Gunners’ matches against top-profile teams.
Due to which, Wenger has opted to use him sparingly, and has not handed him a single start since Arsenal’s 5-1 humiliation against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. The German was reportedly injured for a considerable period of time, but has not been pushed back into the first team.
However, his poor fitness record has once again caught up with him, as he has been ruled out of Germany’s friendly against England on Wednesday due to a hamstring problem.
Due to all these aforementioned conditions, Ozil has failed to attract the interest of the top European clubs, and may have to settle for a move to Turkey, or could even play in the Chinese Super League, should any club make an offer.
