Manchester United have handed highly-rated 16-year old Pierpaolo D’Errico a trial at the club
According to Gianluca DiMarzio, the Italian striker has been handed a trial by Jose Mourinho and has not disappointed, after he scored a hat-trick in his very first game on trial with Manchester United’s youth team.
Speaking after the match, D’Errico was ecstatic with his performance while admitting that a trial with a club of United’s stature felt like a dream. The youngster was also overwhelmed by the stars on Manchester United’s roster, particularly Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
“Being here is an indescribable feeling, a great joy. Today I trained with the Under-18 and, in the field next door, I saw to Ibra and Co. work,” he said, according to Gianluca DiMarzio. “The teams were very strong. I, however, do not stop dreaming.”
The 16-year-old currently plays for Parabita Heffort Soccer Dream in Italy and is the current leading scorer of the ‘Allievi Regionali’. Under manager Javier Chevanton, D’Errico has been exceeding the expectations Parabita had for him this season.
Parabita’s owner Pasquale Bruno – who accompanied D’Errico for the trial – was full of praise for the striker and was proud that a player from his club had earned a trial with Manchester United.
” Pierpaolo is a thoroughbred striker, we pride ourselves on bringing him here. What a thrill for us to see him next to Ibra; the champion and the champion,” he said.
Born in 2000, D’Errico is just the latest in a long line of trials United have handed out over the course of the season. United have been completely revamping their youth set-up and have made massive changes to their staff over the course of the last two years.
The club have been concerned by the fact that there has been an alarming downturn in the number of academy graduates who transition successfully to the first team and have been trying to address this recently.
Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard are the only players of note that has had any real impact on the first team after progressing through United’s academy. It is no surprise, then, that United have been looking to add new blood to their youth ranks over the last year.
Swedish wonderkid Alex Timossi and former Manchester City trialist Martin Murcko have been the most recent trialists with the Red Devils and it appears that they will not slow down their recruitment drive anytime soon.
