Barcelona have singled out Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin as their priority signing this summer
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Blaugranes are willing to make a huge investment in order to land the former La Masia player and will do whatever it takes to re-sign the 21-year old, who has quickly risen to become arguably the best right-back in the English Premier League.
They claim that despite the fact that Luis Enrique looks set to leave the Camp Nou at the end of the season, the subject of Bellerin is one of the “few certainties that exist in the matter of signings” among Barcelona’s hierarchy.
The report states that Barcelona have recognised that they made an error in not spending money on a right-back and instead opting to sign Andre Gomes for a fee that could potentially rise to £46.5 million based on certain clauses.
Barcelona have been linked with a number of right-backs over the past few months, most notably Joao Cancelo who had reportedly agreed terms with the Catalans back in December. However, Mundo Deportivo claim that interest has now cooled – especially considering Cancelo’s form has dipped in recent weeks and he has lost his spot to Martin Montoya – a former Barca player.
Sergi Roberto has been unconvincing at right-back and it was another error from the Spaniard that gifted Leganes with an equaliser last week, and Mundo Deportivo claim that the club have realised he cannot be relied upon yet.
Mundo Deportivo further state that Barcelona’s management see Hector Bellerin as the perfect signing for that position. They will no doubt be especially eager to sign him given he is a native of Catalonia and spent his entire youth with the club.
Bellerin has all the ingredients to evolve into the complete full-back. The Spaniard has incredible pace, good technical ability and has even turned into a solid defender although he is sometimes prone to positional errors.
However, Barcelona’s apparent obsession with signing the Arsenal right-back might not make a difference when it comes to negotiating with Arsenal. The Gunners have now turned into a team that are not forced to sell their stars for money and will definitely want to hold on to one of the most exciting prospects they have had in recent times.
In addition, Bellerin only just signed a 5-year contract in October, and Arsenal will not be under any pressure to cash in on him for fear of losing him soon, unlike the situation they are facing with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.
One boost for the Catalans is the fact that Arsene Wenger’s future has never been in this much doubt and many feel the manager will leave at the end of the season. Should Wenger decide to leave, Barcelona just might have a small chance of signing Bellerin.
