Carl Jenkinson has opened up about his Crystal Palace move that fell through while Arsenal legend David Seaman defends under-fire Petr Cech.
Carl Jenkinson angered by stories about excessive wage demands
Arsenal right-back Carl Jenkinson has rejected claims that his move to Crystal Palace fell through because of his exorbitant wage demands. Jenkinson was heavily linked with a move to Palace throughout the January transfer window and was even given permission to speak to Sam Allardyce’s side.
However, widespread reports claimed that the move to Palace fell through as Jenkinson was demanding a large wage packet. which Palace were unwilling to pay. The Arsenal defender has rejected these claims however, admitting that, while wages play a part, it is the overall picture that matters to him.
“I wanted to clear up some of the things that came out since the move didn’t happen, which were false with regard to the supposed excessive demands for the move to go through. I took it quite personally. I tend to keep away from the papers and what’s written but when I was seeing certain things, I take it personally,” he said, according to the Telegraph.
“It’s a culmination of things. When you do leave a club like Arsenal, everything needs to be right. It needs to be the right manager and financially – don’t get me wrong, I don’t want silly money – it needs to be right for me.”
Jenkinson is a boyhood Arsenal fan and that endeared him to the Gunners supporters when he made the move to the Emirates from Charlton Athletic back in 2011, in a reported £1 million fee. Jenkinson then spent two season on loan with West Ham United under Sam Allardyce before returning to the side at the beginning of this season.
He made a return to the side after an injury to Hector Bellerin but was quickly dropped after a poor performance during Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat to Southampton in the EFL Cup. He has only managed to make 5 appearances and has even been left out of several match day squads since then.
Gabriel has been preferred at right-back and Jenkinson’s time at Arsenal is clearly over. The Englishman is widely expected to leave the club permanently in the summer and will have to do something special to break back into the side by then.
David Seaman defends under-fire Petr Cech
Arsenal legend David Seaman has defended Petr Cech, who has come in for some criticism after his recent performances. Cech made a terrible mistake during Arsenal’s 3-1 loss to Chelsea, giving the ball straight to former Arsenal man Cesc Fabregas for Chelsea’s third, despite being under no pressure.
The Gunners goalkeeper was also arguably at fault for the first goal as well and Arsenal supporters have begun to question whether he should be in the side ahead of David Ospina. However, David Seaman believes Cech is being unfairly criticised but has admitted that he would like to see reported Arsenal target Joe Hart at the Emirates.
“It is a surprise. For me, this season he has been really consistent. He has made some big saves. You look at the goals people are questioning and I don’t see a lot wrong,” he said, according to talkSPORT.
“I think a lot of clubs will go for Joe because he is a quality goalkeeper and it was a massive shock in the summer when he left Manchester City,” he said. “If the situation arises where Arsenal are looking for a goalkeeper then I can’t see a better replacement than Joe Hart.”
Arsenal are reportedly in a race with Liverpool and Chelsea to sign the English international, who is currently on loan at Torino from Manchester City. There have also been reports that Cech is set to be dropped and that David Ospina will return to the side.
