Tottenham have reached an agreement with Swansea for the sale of Tom Carroll, according to reports.

According to the Guardian, Swansea are on the verge of signing the Englishman after agreeing an initial fee. The report iterates that Spurs have accepted a basic offer of around £5 million for Carroll but want to put add-ons in place, something which could see the deal rise to around £9 million.

Swansea are apparently willing to negotiate, and both clubs are confident that a deal will soon be reached. The Guardian further state that Carroll’s switch could happen as early as next week, with new manager Paul Clement looking to quickly change his side’s fortunes.

The 24-year old has been on the books at Tottenham after joining the club in 2010. Carroll spent four seasons out on loan but never really looked like breaking into the Tottenham side, and only managed to make 50 appearances for the side in his 7 years at the club.

Carroll has already spent time with Swansea, having spent a successful loan spell with them in 2014-15 season, with 18 appearances across all competitions and a goal to show for his efforts. However, he has been unable to break into the side under Mauricio Pochettino and has now been deemed surplus to requirements.

Last season looked slightly more promising for the youngster, after he made 27 appearances and scored 3 goals, but he has only made one substitute appearance in the league this season. At 24 years of age, it is probably the best move for both the player and the club.

Carroll’s place in the pecking order at Tottenham was greatly diminished thanks to the signing of Victor Wanyama and the emergence of youngster Harry Winks. Wanyama has been in fine form for Spurs this season, and the 20-year old Winks has already made 19 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring 1 goal.

Carroll having previously played at Swansea and being familiar with a possession-based game at Tottenham, is likely to slot in well at the Liberty Stadium. Also, the 24-year-old is young and hungry to prove his mantle in the Premier League.

It would be intriguing to see if Carroll is able to establish himself as a prominent name in the Premier League as he returns to Swansea, this time on a permanent deal.
