Tottenham Hotspur are set to open transfer talks with River Plate over the signing of starlet Sebastian Driussi
According to Ed Malyon of the Independent, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is ready to open talks with 36-time Argentine champions River Plate over the signing of industrious young attacker Sebastian Driussi.
The 20-year-old has been in sublime form in the league this season as he topped the goal scoring charts halfway into the campaign, finding the back of the net on 10 occasions in 14 appearances.
Driussi is considered as one of the finest South American talents and his performances have seen him attract interest from Serie A giants Juventus as well. Looking at the growing demand of the striker’s services, River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo is intent on extending the player’s contract as he is reportedly reluctant to let go of him.
However, on the plus side for Spurs, club president Rodolfo D’Onofrio and technical director Enzo Francescoli are welcoming the idea of parting ways with the player, but will be looking to command a high fee if they are to let go of him.
Being an Argentinian himself, Pochettino will be trying to do everything possible to convince the club’s representatives as well as the player to move to White Hart Lane. It would undoubtedly give the youngster a better platform to express himself and playing with world-class talents in England’s top flight could help take his career to the next level.
Moreover, Tottenham desperately need to rope in a quality attacker as summer-signing Vincent Janssen has done little to silence his critics since his move from AZ Alkmaar in July.
The Dutch forward has struggled to cope with the physical and grueling nature of England’s top flight and his returns in front of goal have been shambolic. In 15 league appearances, the 22-year-old has managed to score just one goal and has provided a solitary assist.
In the absence of Harry Kane, despite having the option to start with Janssen, Pochettino fielded winger Son Heung-min as a false nine. The South Korean impressed in his brief stint as the focal point of the attack, but an upgrade will be needed on him if Spurs are to realistically challenge for the title.
