French side Olympique Lyonnais are keen on doing some business with Manchester United, but they have gone to the club’s former manager Louis van Gaal first for advice
The Iron Tulip’s days at Old Trafford came to a tragic end after he was sacked shortly after winning the FA Cup with Manchester United. Louis van Gaal is now on a hiatus from coaching and would probably prefer not to look back at his stressful days as United manager.
However, Van Gaal has now surprisingly been approached by Ligue 1 side Lyon seeking input on a possible move for United’s Belgian midfielder Adnan Januzaj. According to French publication L’equipe, Lyon have made Januzaj a top transfer target and former manager Gerrard Houllier has spoken to Van Gaal about the Belgian, as well as out of favour Dutch midfielder Memphis Depay.
The report seems to suggest that Januzaj was the primary agenda. The 21-year-old Belgian is currently on loan at Sunderland, but Les Gones want to sign him on loan for the rest of the season, with an option to buy at the end of the campaign.
Adnan Januzaj hasn’t really done much for Manchester United since his break-out season in 2013-14 under David Moyes. The youngster had an unsuccessful loan term at Borussia Dortmund cut short last season, and has failed to meet expectations at Sunderland.
The 21-year-old is under the wing of his former manager at United David Moyes at the Stadium of Light, but he has performed miserably. Januzaj has started only nine Premier League games for the Black Cats, failing to get on the score-sheet even once.
His only goal this season has come against League One side Shrewsbury Town in the EFL Cup, and his major Premier League highlight is the red card he received in the Black Cats’ game against Tottenham.
However, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has earlier stated that Januzaj remains in his long-term plans for the club. This is unlikely to change, despite the Belgian’s poor form on loan, and the best that Lyon can hope for at this point is a loan deal for the under-performing starlet.
