Liverpool have been handed a huge boost in the pursuit of one of their top targets in the January transfer window.
Jurgen Klopp is looking to raid his former stomping grounds once again. After bringing in the likes of Loris Karius, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan from the Bundesliga this past summer, Liverpool are looking to sign yet another of the German league’s promising players this January.
Swiss winger Emil Forsberg has been in red hot form for Bundesliga upstarts RB Leipzig, and the 25-year-old has recently been heavily linked with a move to Anfield. His agent Hasan Cetinkaya has now hinted that Forsberg may be looking for a move away this winter.
“I will not confirm any names, but a number of big clubs have made enquiries after his first great half of the season,” Cetinkaya told German publication Bild.
“But I cannot promise that Emil will stay this transfer window.”
Liverpool were initially linked with teenage America attacker Christian Pulisic. However, the Borussia Dortmund star has ruled out a move away from the club anytime soon. Klopp and Liverpool have since turned their attention to Forsberg.
The Swiss winger has been a key player for Leipzig this season, and his contract runs till 2021. This means that Liverpool will have to spend a decent amount of money to secure his services, and it is believed that Leipzig want a transfer fee of at least £20 million.
Forsberg has scored five goals and notched up eight assists in 15 Bundesliga appearances for Leipzig. He has played predominantly in a central attacking mid role, but is equally adept at playing on either wing.
This is an important factor behind Liverpool’s pursuit of the player. The Reds will be missing Senegalese winger Sadio Mane because of the African Cup of Nations (AFCoN) and need to find good replacement for the player, who has been crucial for them this season.
Forsberg would represent a great buy for Liverpool and could go on to be much more than just a replacement for Mane. The Swiss sensation is a complete attacking player with excellent finishing, dribbling and passing ability, and could end up being yet another successful coup for Klopp.
